Under normal circumstances, a driver only has a total of 14 hours available of on-duty time, as well as a total of 11 hours of driving time. The 16 hour exception allows a driver to extend the on-duty time they have available as long as certain conditions are met.
Please Note: This does not increase the amount of driving time that driver has available to them.
To be eligible for a 16-hour exception, the driver must meet the following conditions:
- The driver has reported to their main work location on time at the end of the previous 5 days.
- The driver will be reporting to their main work location at the end of this work day, and will be off-duty within these 16 hours.
- They have not used this exception within the past 5 days, or they have performed a 34-hour reset since the last use.
This exception is useful for drivers who begin and end each day at their same work location, and who need extra time due to an unexpected delay that prevents them from returning to their home location before they run out of on-duty time.
